At its core, organizing is about facilitating collective action of a group and empowering people to take on leadership roles both within and outside of our organizations. Simply put, it’s about coming together to increase opportunity and improve the lives of workers. #5) Lean In Circles for Union Tradeswomen

Connect with one another and learn how Lean In Circles can help you achieve your goals together as sisters. Lean In and NABTU's partnership mentorship program supports and empowers women in the trades. Join us for a panel of unionized tradeswomen who have led or participated in the Lean In circle program and hear about the career-changing impact this program can have. You will learn about Lean In Circles – small groups of women who come together to support each other and learn new skills – and how they help women amplify their power. Also, participate in an interactive workshop that will connect you with other tradeswomen and help you learn how to advocate for yourself at work.

#6) Developing Tradeswomen Affinity Groups within Your Local

Saturday, October 29th, 1:00pm - 2:30pm

The labor movement is a dynamic avenue where Affinity committees can showcase the importance and necessity of these groups at any local union. Everyone must have a seat at the table for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts to succeed in the workplace. Women, Young Workers, Veterans and Cultural groups provide support and wisdom to members through inclusion and solidarity. This session will cover how these populations are an asset within the workforce. Workshop participants will learn best practices on how to garner support of local union and national leadership, overcoming obstacles and creating an engaging environment to fuel the progression affinity committees. You will walk away with a feeling of empowerment and a clear path of how to form an affinity group.

#7 Keeping Your Head in the Game: Tradeswomen Leadership Development, Finding Your Place Today & Planning For Tomorrow

This workshop is based on the IUPAT Women’s Leadership Series designed by IUPAT women leaders for women at all levels of unionized construction. The workshop will provide intentional training with group exercises, personal stories, internal SWOT, and various techniques to empower and challenge leaders both personally and professionally.  The goal of the training is to build a cohort of women with shared experiences and values into an ongoing movement that equips tradeswomen with skills and an action plan to reach back and bring other women into the crafts and ranks of unionized construction.

#2) Be That One Guy - How to Address Bullying, Harassment & Intimidation

Sunday. October 30th, 10:45am - 12:15pm

Vicki O’Leary, Director of Diversity from Ironworkers International, and Heather Kurtenbach, Ironworker Business Agent, Local 86, will present “Be That One Guy” anti-harassment, bullying and intimidation training. Vicki won the 2019 Award of Excellence from Engineering News-Record (ENR) for this training. This training teaches bystanders how to become upstanders when witnessing bullying, harassment and intimidation on the job site. If one worker doesn’t have their complete attention on the task at hand (because of a treatment issue) it compromises every worker on that crew.

#6) CPWR: Protecting Workers’ Mental and Physical Health and Safety

CPWR, NABTU’s safety and health arm, serves the construction industry through research, training, and service. This session will cover resources available for free on topics ranging from suicide prevention, safety and health hazards, and opioid use disorder prevention; CPWR-funded university-based research projects on women mentorship and exoskeletons; and a training program aimed at bringing women and other non-traditional groups into apprenticeship programs.

This panel/workshop combo session will discuss the ecosystem between the public sector, industry and unions, and how we are all taking proactive measures together to build a strong future for tradeswomen. A panel of government and union leaders will discuss current industry barriers and challenges and outline unprecedented investments and initiatives across North America to uplift tradeswomen. The session will also facilitate a deep dive workshop to engage tradeswomen in small groups on these initiatives, provide resources and foster collaboration on the best practices needed to scale up these initiatives across North America.
